Sorry, but you are naive. Words are not deeds. In fact, pretty words can mollify and divide, and postpone the necessity for real action for a generation or more. A generation is all that the current generation of dictators and despots ever need, wherever they are. If you are so optimistic, please come live in China outside of the top 3% income bracket and then see how optimistic you are. The future is promising for those in the top 3% because their burgeoning economic power forces accommodations from those who rule. But don’t think that applies broadly, or that there is any other reason for it. Ted Bundy talked pretty words to his victims, too. Your optimism reminds me of them.

Replace USSR with current US or western world in that sentence. You will see that sentence is still true for them too. Have you heard about wikileaks document, millions of lives lost in Iraq and other civilian losts in Afganisthan? and recent Roma incident and laws against Muslim burqa in France? What you see is what media is telling you to see. So you don’t understand your own countries are as much evil as former USSR and other so called evil countries.

An overtly strong China albeit good for the economy and world trade, is pretty dangerous for world peace because public sentiment will not sway their militaristic ambitions in any way, and ambitions they have.

The communist cadre are here to stay and the chain of command and succession in their well oiled system will not bow out especially now when they are on the upswing.

Best not to read much into what the Chinese leadership says, their track record for going back on their word and back stabbing is legendary.

We need a strong India and a strong Japan (and or EU) to keep things in balance

When you read xinhua, etc., you find that stability effectively equals continued one-party rule. What they’re effectively saying is that they’ll try to have some freedoms so long as they don’t interfere with Party rule.

Don’t trust the sugared words of despots.

@Mantas, the people in the U.S. believe they are in the land of the free as in USSR, but they are routinely beat up and thrown in jail for enjoying some relaxing pot themselves.

You are so naive. As a Chinese grown up within mainland and living aboard for ten years, I saw this country is heading to anywhere but democracy and liberty.

The freedom of speech is far far away from us, and most of Chinese did not realize this is root of their pain. So we have a long long way to go

growth? you think economies and populations can still grow? guess you’ve never heard of peak oil, peak phosphorous, peak water, peak everything?

it won’t be pretty when that dominant paradigm falls flat on it’s face, but i’m guessing countries like china will be far better placed to weather the storm.

China is just hoping to follow “Dictatorship to Democracy” model previously adopted by its neighbors, Japan and South Korea. The Chinese argument is if Japan and South Korea are able to pull it through, why can’t China.

But What they overlook is the simple fact that China is so huge compared to its neighbors and that dictatorship will most probably lead to disaster in a massive country. Case in point is former USSR.

I hope this is true. I wish China case will be solved soon. And we won’t end up with another disfunctional ex-communist state.

However, USSR for many years stated that they’re pro-human rights and pro-working class and pro-freedom in general. And some westerners still believe that bullshit!

The Beatles were big fans of USSR at one point. However, USSR citizens were beaten up by police for listening to their music…
